Luis is a Catherine Othieno Sempa Memorial Post-Baccalaureate Fellow and currently a Research Technician I at the Gaiha Lab. In 2024, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. There, he was part of the iGEM-RUM synthetic biology research team, where he focused on developing a genetic construct for the biodegradation of RDX in the Anones Lagoon in Vieques, Puerto Rico. His interests lie at the intersection of genetic engineering and immunology, particularly in onco-immunotherapy and CAR-T cell therapy.
At the Gaiha Lab, he is working on developing a system that harnesses the life cycle of the M13 bacteriophage in E. coli, to enable the rapid evolution of therapeutic biomolecules, such as monoclonal antibodies. His long-term goal is to become an immuno-oncologist and contribute to the development of novel therapies that target chronic diseases, particularly those disproportionately affecting underrepresented communities like Puerto Rico. Outside the lab, he enjoys exploring new music, playing beach volleyball, and discovering the best coffee spots in town.
